I have lived in Devon for almost 5 years- it is where I started learning photography. I have travelled to lots of locations within the county, but here are what I think are the best. Let me know if you think something’s missing from the list!

1. Bantham Beach.

SOUTH DEVON

About 20 miles east of Plymouth, and very close to Salcombe, this beach has plenty of variety for subjects. Most obviously, just to the south of it is this sea stack, known as the ‘Bantham Hand’.

It’s a good idea to check the car park opening times before visiting here.

2. Wistman’s Wood.

CENTRAL DEVON

To be honest, you can drive aimlessly around Dartmoor and something will always catch your eye. Right in the heart of Dartmoor is Wistman’s Wood, which looks like an enchanted forest straight out of a story book. The forest is roughly a 20 minute walk from the car park and the terrain isn’t particularly challenging.

3. Brownstone Battery.

SOUTH DEVON

Brownstone Battery is a WWII costal defence position. The coastline is steep, but stunning. At the top of the hill is the Daymark Tower (pictured), which was built as a landmark to guide ships into harbour in Dartmouth.

If you head there to photograph the tower, beware that the field is sometimes completely bare! This image was taking in May so that time of year should be consistent.

4. Hartland Lighthouse

NORTH DEVON

A hidden gem of the North Devon coast, a 20 minute drive from Bideford. Note that the coastline is not accessible.

5. Westward Ho!

NORTH DEVON

A vast white sandy beach, central to North Devon. A great place to practice minimalist photographs, or after high tide you can photograph the old weir. If conditions aren’t favourable, have a look at the nearby villages of Appledore or Clovelly.

6. Start Point.

SOUTH DEVON

At almost the very southernmost point of Devon is this picturesque lighthouse. It can be a bit of a trek to get to, as you have to drive on a lot of single track roads- but the view is absolutely worth it.
